Bio
Barry Lane was a relatively latecomer to the world of golf, picking up his first set of clubs aged 14 (and promptly breaking three within his first week of playing with them) but once he’d discovered the thrill of striking the ball in a field near his home in Bracknell, Barry was hooked.
As a youngster he would caddy at the weekends to earn money so that he could play every day after school. Lane showed he has enormous natural talent at the game, even telling a careers officer at age 15 he wanted to be a professional golfer. The career’s officer laughed, but within 12 months, Lane had become a professional.
His formative years were spent working as an assistant professional at Downshire Golf, playing in a lot of pro-am events mainly in the South of England.
Barry realised his dream of becoming a tour professional after his third attempting at Tour Qualifying School. Although as a new professional, Lane didn’t have a sponsor, so could only afford to tend UK tournaments.
Things changed in 1986, when after finishing 7th at the qualifying school, he started to gain additional sponsors and became a full time member of the European Tour. That extra competition proved valuable and in 1988, Barry recorded his first win as a professional at the 1988 Scottish Open.
In a career that spanned over 25 years on the European Tour, Lane competed in over 670 tournaments. He also competed in the 1993 Ryder Cup
After qualifying for the Seniors Tour, Lane has continued to play high quality golf, winning three times in just one and a half seasons. MLA Tour are delighted to welcome Barry as our first Tour Pro and we hope that he will continue to sink putts and win many more tournaments for many years to come.
